Baylor Campus Quad

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Originally used by student cadets for marching drills, the main quad at Baylor has acted as the school’s social hub since moving to its current location in 1915. Before WMWA was approached to redesign this space, the Baylor Quad was no more than a small expanse of asphalt paving, despite still housing many of the school’s most important social events. In wanting to continue the tradition of this communal space into the future, the Baylor School tasked WMWA with redesigning the quad in a way that celebrated its past, maintained its purpose as a flexible event space, and provided a more pleasant setting for study and leisure. The resulting design features a generous, multi-use lawn, flanked by an historic amphitheater and flexible plaza space on either end. Circulation through the quad follows desire lines and formally echoes the shield shape seen on buildings throughout campus and the Baylor logo. Updated planting, artfully placed seating, and timeless materials create a more comfortable environment for students, and the simplicity of the layout accommodates the various events that are held in this space.
