To meet the needs of increasing enrollment and the subsequent demands on the campus at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, WMWA led the design and implementation of a pedestrian promenade that replaced a space that was traditionally reserved for vehicular access. Just east of Chattanooga’s urban core, the new promenade aimed to improve safety and connectivity, while offering a design language that visually united the long, linear space. The design features a wide central paved corridor, increased green space, tree canopy, and dispersed nodes for gathering. Bioretention is incorporated to reduce run-off in this combined sewer overflow section of the city, and the project’s intimate setting within the campus provides a learning opportunity outside the classroom for students and faculty. WMWA’s role as the lead designer was a fundamental component of this project, as the team worked to coordinate and develop a sensible design with state, city, and university stakeholders.
